Bonsai Pruning Instructions

Prune bonsai trees

When taking care of our Bonsai Tree’s. pruning is of the utmost importance – its important that we know how, its important when we prune and its most important that we know exactly what type of pruning OUR Bonsai Tree requires.

We want to create the best possible look and shape for our Bonsai’s , so we must know what is best for our Bonsai Tree’s and know how much is too much and when its too early to prune our Bonsai’s again.

Many Bonsai Tree’s cant recover as fast as other tree’s. And some can only be pruned at certain times of the year. And there is a special shape to the different Bonsai tree’s, and we must know when and HOW to prune our Bonsai’s if we want our Bonsai to have that beautiful and natural look.

Finger Pruningfinger prune

Best for Junipers and Cedars

One of the basic pruning methods, is the “Finger Pruning” method. No scissors and this is the best way to prune newer leaves without leaving the bonsai with an unnatural look to it.

Simply take the newer leaves between your thumb and forefinger and while holding onto the older part of the plant, gently Twist the new part, keeping it level with the older, more normal shape of the Bonsai Tree.

(Use scissors for the deciduous trees such as maples, the chinese elm and cotoneaster)

Leaf Pruning

pruning the bonsai

Great for Ficus and Maples

Sometimes referred to as “Defoliation”, Leaf Pruning is mostly used for deciduous and tropical trees. This method works great for reducing leaf size AND it will Speed Up Growth 2 TIMES as Fast at the same time.

(Use fine scissors or cutting) Simply cut off 60-90% of the leaves , like all the yellow and dead leaves – leaving enough for the Tree to keep up energy. Cut the leaf right behind the leaf, leaving as much of the branch as possible. We are going to prepare the Bonsai Tree to grow full and green, with big , healthy leaves.

You will have your Bonsai Tree looking twice as full and after 2-3 seasons, you will have a Full and Dark Green Bonsai Tree.

(Must provide plenty of water and hospitable climate -Not all plants are able to handle this type of pruning)
