Willow Leaf Ficus – Forest
The Willow Leaf ficus is truly a wonderful Bonsai on all levels. Not only is it an amazing Ficus for Shohin Bonsai – but it can thrive in outdoor conditions -as well as indoor growing.
A tropical tree in nature, the Willow Leaf Ficus is actually quite easy to care for – which , in my opinion, has helped to make this Bonsai Tree one of the absolute most popular Bonsais for new and experienced Bonsai enthusiasts.
Willow Leaf Ficus Information
Over the years the actual name of this wonderful Bonsai has been debated and even changed frequently -Ficus salicifolia, (a direct translation of the common name Willow Leaf Ficus), to Ficus neriifolia, (nerii refers to the genus Oleander which has narrow leaves but is not a ficus), to Ficus salicaria. Which seems to blend with the overall mysterious nature of the Willow Leaf Ficus – a tree that has no record of EVER been seen in the wild.
Not recorded until the lat 1950′s -we are yet to discover any real roots as to where this Bonsai Tree first originated. Some have stated that the Willow Leaf may have come from South Africa -some have said Latin America. But the truth of the matter -and the fuel for mystery – is that we have ABSOLUTELY NO PROOF.
The Willow Leaf Ficus Bonsai Tree can be made into virtually any style from formal upright to cascade. The only style that doesn’t work is driftwood attached as the dead wood of the Ficus is not very hard nor very durable. Deadwood branches don’t last long. Holes and scars can be used but expect them to rot over the years.
Willow Leaf Ficus Care
The Willow Leaf Ficus has eminently suitable traits for shohin bonsai. It makes small narrow leaves that respond well to leaf reduction techniques. It grows quickly so it can develop into a shohin style in a short time. The fast growth also means it will develop ramification in a one or two seasons giving the feel of a mature bonsai.
It also does rather well in shallow pots -and it needs very little roots to grow.
Can grow and thrive in any soil – and in many cases, the Willow Leaf Ficus has been able to grow WITHOUT soil if the humidity is correct and it has sufficient liquid fertilizer.
The most important element of taking care of the Willow Ficus, is the roots. If the tubers arent cut and carved properly, they can actually ruin the scale of the Bonsai Tree. And make sure to watch out for scarring – small scars heal rather easily -but larger scars, will have a very hard time healing, leaving a noticeable mark on the Bonsai Tree.
